By day, the Modern's setting on eleven naturally landscaped acres—including an outdoor sculpture garden and terrace and a large reflecting pond at the building's edge—provides a restful complement to the building's architectural strength. By night, with the concrete walls bathed in an even glow of light, the transparent glass-and-steel galleries appear as large lanterns floating on and reflected in the pond.

From this space diners have a spectacular view of the three shorter rectangular volumes which contain the exhibition galleries and the surrounding water plaza whose mirror-like surface reflects the entire building.
These volumes each with their structural 'Y' column supporting the flat overhanging concrete roof reflected into the shallow pool of water that also serves as a buffer between the museum and the passing highway.
Forty-foot-high transparent walls of glass framed in metal surround a concrete envelope containing the exhibition spaces.
