Store on E. Warren and Conner? Surely is used to be a Kingsway Dept. Store and then Shopper's World until it was closed in Right in front of the Federal's store they were giving helicopter rides. My sister and I went up for a ride in an old Bell helicopter with the bubble front like on the old "Highway Patrol" series. Or the one on the opening of "MASH". Cool memories. The furniture store is next door. What did they tear down of the Ferndale Federal's besides part of the "tower" on the corner?
It used to run from the alley a bit up 9 Mile around the corner to the Radio City Good old Hamtramck politics Detroitej72 Member Username: Detroitej72 Post Number: Registered: Posted on Tuesday, February 19, - pm: Supposedly, the Hamtown location is to be replaced with an Aldi's and apartments on the top 3 floors. It was one of the smaller Federal's stores and was closed during an overhaul of the downtown Wyandotte shopping area in the late 's during which a lot of buildings were torn down some of them in bad shape or fixed up.
I think after the opening of the considerably larger Federal's in Southgate Shopping Center which lpg stated correctly as about business went down at the Wyandotte location and it eventually closed. The building was vacant for a while before it became City Hall.
I am not sure of the exact year the Wyandotte Federal's closed but I know for sure it's somewhat before and my guess would closer to Seems like the church has been there for more than a year but I could be mistaken.
I moved away from Michigan in January of and it had already been Service Merchandise for several years. It became the Sears surplus back in the mid's. I have done a few web searches and come up with nothing. I am just trying to verify some old memories. I still have a baseball mitt with the Feds logo or font. A few years ago when we bought our house, we were pulling up the carpet remnants that had covered the living room floor since maybe when it was built???
There was a reverse copy of a full page Federals' ad permanently inked onto the hardwood that all the chemicals could not erase.
Before we refinished the floors, I would move the furniture and show people the ad. My daughter went to those classes. The last one was a fashion show and afterward each girl got to buy the dress she modeled. My daughter enjoyed the whole experience very much. It dominated the landscape. It closed in The building is still standing and has not been occupied since. It was across the side street from "The 8 Mile Big Boy", a favorite haunt of mine while I was in high school. I saw the building yesterday and remarked to myself how it had never again been occupied Don't think that I wasn't paranoid yesterday Archive through February 11, New threads cannot be started on this page. This charming Detroit-based store prided itself on plenty of savings and a wide variety of grocery items to select from — eventually expanding throughout the region to include more than locations.
The company reached its demise in This Detroit-area chain first opened its doors in the s and drew in shoppers from across the region at its multiple locations. Unfortunately, with the emergence of "big-box" style supermarkets like Meijer and Kroger, Chatham was unable to financially compete. Today, many former Chatham locations are owned and operated by Kroger. Music lovers from throughout Detroit and its surrounding areas have lovely memories of perusing the record selection at Harmony House.
This fantastic little chain first opened in the suburb of Hazel Park in , ultimately expanding to include nearly 40 stores. The last Harmony House location closed in This chain actually began in Massachusetts, but its Detroit-area locations were majorly successful during their heyday.
I saw this bumper sticker somewhere in the Packard Plant , many years ago:. Federal's had 12 neighborhood locations in the city, but none of them were downtown; they were a blue-collar oriented department store alternative to the higher-class downtown giants such as Hudson's and Crowley's.
A loose board parted, and we found ourselves standing inside of a big window display, on a big turntable:. In the "sit-down" strike craze was sweeping the nation in the wake of the great Flint Sit-Down. Soon non-automotive factories, hotels, and even five-and-dime store employees were sitting down for better wages and conditions. The Encyclopedia of Strikes in American History says that even the larger chain retail stores had sit-downs, especially in Detroit where the strike fever was hottest, and Federal's was one of the ones that was struck, as well as Lerner's, Allen's Shoes, and Crowley Milner's.
These were usually brief and quite peaceful strikes, but unlike the sit-downs in the factories, these retail store strikes were far more visible to the average everyday person A lot more of the general public came and went from Federal's Department Store on any given day than came or went from a car plant.
I discussed the incredible galvanizing impact of the sit-down strikes and the organized labor movement on Detroit in older posts about the Kelsey-Hayes Wheel Plant , the Ternstedt Plant , and the Slovak Home. During the s, Hudson's and Federal's both "accelerated their hiring of blacks very visibly," according to a book by B.
Hudson's had previously been known for their "brown bag test" hiring standard; if a black person's skin was darker than a paper bag, they would be refused employment--or so my mother told me. Usually they were only allowed menial service jobs, the most prestigious of which was being an elevator operator. Just a few years later, building racial tensions were unleashed in the Detroit Riot. The riot was mostly concentrated within the girdle of Grand Boulevard, but for some reason the Grand River Avenue corridor saw arson and looting almost all the way out to Telegraph Road , so I wouldn't be surprised if this store was affected by the mayhem.
The neighborhood certainly hasn't done terribly well since then, to say the least. Federal's Department Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in , and closed most of its far-flung stores, to concentrate on saving its flagships in Detroit and Flint. Federal's was purchased in the late s by "self-help guru" Steven West.
